In 1979, Robert Gates, then CIA director, discussed U.S. efforts to get the USSR into war in Afghanistan.
Through clandestine tactics, the Gates-led CIA aided the Taliban to fight the Soviets. After engaging, the Soviets wised up and left. Now, the current and future Secretary of Defense has to deal with the blowback of a manufactured quagmire he helped create.
